Truth Byte #2:

"When you are ready, you will start."

I have spent years feeling bad about not starting.  I finally finished my Ph.D. and it was time to hang up my shingle and get to work.  I had all the resources, all the book knowledge, all the cheerleaders I needed, but something just wasn't working.  My business wasn't launching the way I knew it could.

I have been reflecting over the last year why it took me so long to really get started.  What I realized was really quite simple and equally profound: I wasn't ready.

In any life endeavour, there are six ingredients we need for success:

  • A good idea
  • A friend who believes in you
  • Enough money to get it going
  • Enough time to invest in growing in it
  • The skill or talent to sustain it
  • Trust that it will all work out

I have worked with hundreds of people who are trying to reach some goal, be it personal or professional, and when people bump against failure after failure, it is usually because something is missing.  The most easy excuses are money and time, but when we have mastered those demon stories, more subtle and persistent challenges come up.

For a long time, I believed I didn't have any good ideas.  Then I realized I have lots of good ideas, but they are not original.  Someone in ancient Greece already said it, so what's the point in repeating it?  I got through that trap with the help of the scholars before me, and on to my second excuse: no one supports me.

That was actually an outright lie.  Dozens of people supported me, believed in me, but I was actually holding them away, keeping them at arms length and not really sharing my vision because I though I might fail, and then what?  Some strong and honest mentors entered my life at that point, to help me get through the the old and tired excuses of time and money.

I read the Law of Attraction and watched The Secret and understood that my own mind and stories from the past were limiting me, and it wasn't "the man" who was trying got keep me down after all.  Finally, I faced the next lie: a lack of talent.  I began to notice people all around me who have much less than me who were doing much more with it.  So I couldn't hide out there anymore. And so I collected the first five ingredients needed to make my life taste the way I wanted it to.

But still, there was a gap.

This year, I have been mastering the final ingredient: faith.  Faith is actually a spiritual principle, and so it took more than textbooks and teachers for me to drink it in.  Faith is a lens through which I can now see the world.  I now actually believe that what drives my relationships, my business, my entire life is this loving presence that is moving me towards wholeness.

Call it my soul, my higher self, my super-ego, or the voice of my ancestors, what I know is that the mystical part of me has to be attended to if I want to run my business ethically and successfully, while feeling like what I do actually matters.  Form and spirit are not separate, and my can life become the physical demonstration of my innermost prayers.

And so now, with these six ingredients, I am finally ready to bake the cake of my life.  And so I can start.  If you haven't started yet, rather than wasting your time and energy feeling bad, try getting these six things lined up.  Before you know it, the tidal wave of your life will propel you to the next step.  And you will be ready.
